Independent measurement · August 2026
The at-home pet euthanasia vets ChatGPT actually recommends.
Pet owners don't just search anymore — they ask ChatGPT who to see. So we measured the answer. We asked for the best at-home pet euthanasia vet in 12 U.S. metros, 4 different ways each — 48 checks in all — and recorded every practice it named.
Only 28%
of the 696 U.S. at-home pet euthanasia vets we benchmarked ever came up. These are the ones pet owners are told to see.

Measured August 13, 2026 on ChatGPT (gpt-4o, with web search): 12 metros × 4 question phrasings = 48 checks. No other AI system is included in these numbers. How we measured it
One difference from the other boards in this network, stated plainly: every question here was asked twice, not once. Half the practice-and-question pairs that came up on the first ask did not come up on the second. Because asking twice finds more names, a practice has to be named in at least 3 of the 4 questions to be listed here, where most of our boards list at 2.
The national networks don't own the answer.
Lap of Love, CodaPet, Pet Loss at Home and the PetWorks booking platform place vets into local markets and take a share of each visit. Between them they took about 27% of ChatGPT's recommendations in our checks. The other 73% went to practices that do not carry one of those names.

Every metro below was benchmarked the same way: 4 pet owner-style questions, every answer recorded. Pick your city to see the full measured list.
ChatGPT's answer moves between checks, so we publish how many of the 4 checks named each one instead of a rank that would change if we asked again.

What the work costs, what pet owners ask us most, and tools that give you a number in about a minute. Nothing here is a sales page and nothing asks for your phone number.
What things cost
Real price ranges for the work pet owners ask about most, with every figure traced back to a named source.
- How much does at-home pet euthanasia cost?CareCredit puts at-home dog euthanasia at $410 on average. Lap of Love publishes a base price on each metro page and Pet Loss at Home publishes a three-tier table on some of them. All three, side by side, read on 2026-08-23.
- How much does it cost to put a dog to sleep?CareCredit publishes an average of $139 to put a dog to sleep at a clinic and $410 at home, with a figure for every state. What the range covers, what aftercare adds, and what to ask.
- How much does it cost to put a cat to sleep?CareCredit publishes an average of $158 to put a cat to sleep at a clinic and $359 at home, with a figure for every state. What a cat's size changes, and what it does not.
- How much does pet cremation cost?CareCredit publishes a cremation price table by the pet's weight, from $45 for a communal cremation under 30 pounds to $450 for a private one over 90. What each option means and what it does not include.
Common questions
Straight answers, written for the person paying — not a lead form and not a sales page.
- How much does a mobile vet cost?A mobile vet charges for the visit plus travel, and the published figures come from end-of-life providers: CodaPet from $360, Lap of Love $475 to $560 by metro. Why a single national price does not exist.
- What can a mobile vet do?PetMD's account of mobile practice: exams, vaccinations, blood work, X-rays and euthanasia at home, with anaesthesia, surgery and hospitalisation referred back to a clinic.
- Are mobile vets more expensive than regular vets? For the same visit, yes: CareCredit puts clinic euthanasia at $139 for a dog against $410 at home. What the extra buys, and the one case where a mobile vet can cost less.
- Do mobile vets take insurance?Pet insurance reimburses you rather than paying the vet, so a mobile practice is covered the same way a clinic is. What you need on the invoice, and what euthanasia coverage turns on.
- How does a mobile vet work?A mobile vet books an appointment window, drives to your address and works in your home or their van. What happens in order, and what to have ready before they arrive.
- Are mobile vets reliable?A mobile veterinarian holds the same state licence as a clinic one. How to verify it, what a solo practice changes about scheduling, and the questions worth asking first.
- How does it work when a vet comes to your home?A vet comes to your house, sedates your pet until they are asleep, then gives the final injection. What each step involves, described from the providers' own published accounts.
- Do vets take payment plans? Some practices bill in instalments and CareCredit explains why many cannot. What Scratch Pay publishes for terms, and the eligibility rule that stops one national grant from covering euthanasia.
Measured, never sold.
No at-home pet euthanasia vet can pay to appear on these lists. A practice is listed only because ChatGPT actually recommended it when we asked — more than once. We publish how many of the checks named each one, not a place, because the count holds up when we ask again and a place doesn't. That's the whole formula.

How did you measure which U.S. at-home pet euthanasia vets ChatGPT recommends?
We asked ChatGPT the questions real pet owners ask — like "Who does in-home pet euthanasia near me?" — 4 different ways, and recorded every practice recommended. Each practice on this list was named in more than one of those answers, and we publish how many named it rather than a place in a ranking — ask ChatGPT again and the top name often changes, but the count holds. We ran 48 checks for this market and compared the answers against the 696 U.S. practices in our dataset.
Can a at-home pet euthanasia vet pay to be on this list?
No. This list is measured, never sold. A practice appears on it only if ChatGPT actually recommended it when we asked. Money cannot buy a place on this list. Sponsored blocks are labeled advertising and sit outside the ranked list.
What does it mean if a practice is NOT on this list?
It means that when we asked ChatGPT for an at-home pet euthanasia vet in U.S., that practice never came up. That says nothing about the quality of their work — only that pet owners who ask AI for a recommendation are being sent somewhere else. Most practices haven't shown up in AI answers yet, so the list is short.
How often is this updated?
We re-run the same benchmark quarterly with the same methodology, so practices that improve their AI visibility can appear in the next update. This edition was measured in August 2026.
What if something on this page about my practice is wrong?
Tell us at /corrections and we will check it against the source. A wrong name, phone number, address, licence or service is a defect and we fix it. A ranking is different: it is a measurement of what ChatGPT answered, so it is never for sale and by the same rule never removable or editable on request. A number you can talk us out of would not be worth publishing.
