How much does at-home pet euthanasia cost?
CareCredit puts the national average for at-home dog euthanasia at $410, in a range of $325 to $747.
That average is for a dog. CareCredit puts the same visit for a cat at $359, in a range of $284 to $653. It puts the clinic visit far lower — $139 for a dog and $158 for a cat — and the gap is mostly the vet's time and the drive.

This page is general information, not veterinary advice. Whether and when to say goodbye is a decision for you and your own veterinarian, who has seen your pet. Every figure here is a price someone else published, and the only number that applies to your family is the one your vet quotes you.
What the three national providers publish, by metro
Lap of Love, CodaPet and Pet Loss at Home all place vets into local markets, and all three publish prices. We read all twelve of this board's metros on 2026-08-23.

Two gaps in that table are ours: no Lap of Love page was found for Tampa, and Pet Loss at Home publishes its table on five of the twelve metros.

One publisher also disagrees with itself, so both readings are printed. Lap of Love's own cost guide says the base price in the Chicagoland area is $530. Its Chicago service page, read the same day, says $560. Neither figure has been averaged into the other.

What is inside the base price
Lap of Love's metro pages carry the line "Base pricing includes standard veterinarian travel", and list the appointment as covering a call beforehand, sedation, the euthanasia itself, a clay pawprint, a lock of fur, and help arranging aftercare. CodaPet, whose published figure starts at $360, splits its total into a service fee, a platform fee for booking, and a travel fee that depends on how far the vet drives.
Timing moves it too. Lap of Love says an evening, weekend, holiday or last-minute appointment may carry a surcharge of $100 to $200.
Why no page here gives you a total
Because none of the three publishes the numbers a total would need. All of them name your pet's weight and the vet's travel distance as what moves the price, and none prints a figure against either: CodaPet lists its travel fee as based on your location, and Pet Loss at Home says final costs vary with weight, distance, scheduling and aftercare. We are not going to invent the missing numbers.

Aftercare is the other half of the bill, and the half with a published weight table: what pet cremation costs, by weight.
What to ask when you call
- Ask for the total including travel to your address. Travel is the line most likely to be missing from a quoted price.
- Ask whether your time slot carries a surcharge. Evenings and weekends are quoted separately by at least one provider.
- Ask whether cremation is inside that number or added to it. One provider prints that row as a total on some metro pages and marks it extra on others.
- Ask who takes your pet afterwards, when the ashes come back, and what happens if you have to cancel.

Questions people ask next
- Is at-home euthanasia more expensive than a clinic?
- On CareCredit's published figures, yes: a dog's clinic visit at $139 on average against $410 at home, and a cat's at $158 against $359. The difference buys the vet's travel and a longer, quieter appointment.
- What is the cheapest way to arrange at-home euthanasia?
- Pet Loss at Home's lowest published tier, $300 to $450 nationally, is the one where the family arranges aftercare themselves. Local shelters also run reduced-cost end-of-life services, and your own veterinarian will know which ones near you do.
- Does the price change with my dog's weight?
- Every national provider says it can, and none publishes the figure. CodaPet notes a pet over 100 pounds may mean the vet needs help moving them. Ask for your dog's weight to be priced into the quote.
