How does a mobile vet work?
A mobile vet books an appointment window, drives to your address, and treats your pet in your home or in their van.
There is no waiting room and no carrier. You book a window rather than a slot, because the vet is driving between houses and traffic is part of the job. When they arrive they work where your pet is comfortable — a bed, a couch, the garden — or in a fitted van parked outside, depending on the practice and what is being done.

What they bring, and what they cannot
PetMD's example of a mobile practice covers physical exams, vaccinations, blood work and X-rays, plus consultations on nutrition, weight, allergies, diabetes and senior care, with some practices also handling euthanasia and delivering medication. The limit is anaesthesia: PetMD says most mobile vets do surgery and dental work at an affiliated office, or refer it, and that hospitalisation is not something a house call can offer.

What to do before they arrive
- Decide where you want the visit to happen and make that spot ready. It is the one decision only you can make.
- Put other pets somewhere else unless you have agreed they will be present.
- Have someone available to help if your pet is large, and say so when you book.
- Have your pet's history to hand — current medications, the practice that has been treating them, anything recent.
- Ask how payment is handled, so it is not being sorted out at the door.
How an end-of-life visit runs
Lap of Love publishes the order. The veterinarian arrives, meets your pet, spends time with them and answers your questions. An injectable sedative comes first, and your pet may sigh, lie down and drift off. Once they are fully relaxed the vet gives the euthanasia medication into a vein through a small catheter or a needle and syringe, and it stops the heart. Afterwards the vet gives you the time you need.
