How much does pet cremation cost?

CareCredit publishes pet cremation at $45 to $200 for a communal cremation and $100 to $450 for a private one, depending on weight.

This is the one part of the bill anyone publishes a table for. The rest of an at-home appointment moves with weight and travel distance that no provider prices publicly, so it is quoted rather than listed. Cremation is quoted by weight band, and the band is the whole rule.

This page is general information, not veterinary advice. Whether and when to say goodbye is a decision for you and your own veterinarian, who has seen your pet. Every figure here is a price someone else published, and the only number that applies to your family is the one your vet quotes you.

CareCredit adds the line most people do not expect: there is no price difference between cremating cats and small dogs. It also prices the far end of the scale separately, putting a pony or a horse at $800 to $1,500 and up.

Communal and private are not the same thing

A private cremation means your pet is cremated alone and the ashes come back to you. A communal or group cremation means your pet is cremated with other pets, and because there is no way to keep the ashes separate, none are returned. CareCredit puts the national average for a private cremation at $260 for a dog and $180 for a cat.

If having the ashes back matters to you, the word to listen for on the phone is private or individual. Communal and group both mean the ashes are not returned.

The urn is usually separate. CareCredit says basic urns start at around $50 and that decoration or personalisation costs more.

How the in-home providers quote it

Pet Loss at Home publishes three national tiers: $300 to $450 where the family keeps the pet for home burial or arranges transport themselves, $400 to $650 with a group cremation and no ashes returned, and $600 to $850 with a private cremation and the ashes returned. CodaPet lists cremation and keepsakes as optional and priced separately from its visit fee.

Read the wording on any one of those tables before you assume what it includes. On Pet Loss at Home's Atlanta page the cremation rows are $650 to $750 and $800 to $950 and read as the whole bill; on its Tampa page the same two rows are $350 to $400 and $500 to $575 and are marked "(extra)". Same publisher, same template, two different meanings. Ask which one you were quoted.

Questions people ask next

How much does it cost to cremate a dog?
On CareCredit's published weight table, a communal cremation runs $45 to $200 and a private one $100 to $450, depending on the dog's weight. CareCredit's national average for a private dog cremation is $260, in a range of $206 to $473.
Do I get my pet's ashes back?
Only with a private or individual cremation. CareCredit describes a communal or group cremation as your pet being cremated alongside other pets, with no way to keep the ashes separate, so none are returned.
Is cremation included when a vet comes to the house?
Sometimes, and the tables disagree about it. Pet Loss at Home publishes tiers that include transport and cremation on some metro pages, while its Tampa page marks the same rows as extra. CodaPet prices cremation separately from the visit. Ask whether the number you were given is the whole bill.
What does an urn cost?
CareCredit says basic urns start at around $50, with decorated or personalised ones costing more. It is normally quoted apart from the cremation itself.
